Navajo is a Nation not a trend

March 25, 2012

I had to check myself this afternoon while out shopping. Going into this pretty cute little store, i saw all these interesting looking necklaces on display. The clerk goes on about how she made everything in the store, i’m like yeah this one’s really cute, and she starts talking about how it’s “super Navajo.” I nod, and five seconds later ask if that’s where she’s from, the Southwest? But, sadly, no, she’s just another settler trying to ride the trend of stealing other peoples’ style. Don’t Armed!

The trend really hit me when i visited another store and ran my eyes up and down this super cute Naked & Famous shirt, and then realized these Montreal designers were doing the same goddamned thing. Why can’t these shops just import shirts from some original designers and not hire copycat after copycat?

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Navajo Nation has sued Urban Outfitters Inc. months after the tribe sent a cease and desist letter to the clothing retailer demanding it pull the “Navajo” name from its products. The lawsuit filed late Tuesday in U.S. District Court in New Mexico alleges trademark violations and violations of the federal Indian Arts and Crafts Act, which makes it illegal to sell arts or crafts in a way to falsely suggest theyre made by American Indians when theyre not.The tribe has about 10 registered trademarks on the Navajo name that cover clothing, footwear, online retail sales, household products and textiles. Tribal justice officials said theyre intent on protecting what they believe are among the tribes most valuable assets.
